Treatments
Treatment sessions normally take place at floor level on a futon (large padded mat) but for disability clients it can also take place on a massage table or in situ in a wheelchair.
The usual length of a treatment is 50 to 60 minutes; however the first session may be longer to accommodate the initial consultation to discuss health and medical history and to agree priorities and aims for the treatment. All information provided is treated in the strictest confidence. This information is interpreted from both a Western and Oriental perspective. The style of treatment depends on the client’s needs or priorities & can be gentle or dynamic. At the end of each session we will discuss any feedback you may have. I may also give you some suggestions to help you retain the benefits of the treatment and devise an exercise program to help address particular problems.
The number of treatments you will require is not fixed but it is usual for 2 or 3 sessions to be needed to make changes that provide a long term benefit
Contraindications following treatment
The nature of the treatments make it unlikely for there to be any side effects. Occasionally a new client may have reactions after the first session. This occurs when toxins have been released during the treatment, and as these work out through the body there may be minor flu type symptoms. Similarly clients suffering from odemia are likely to find a significantly increased rate of urination. Such symptoms are transitory and soon pass, usually within 12 hours, drinking plenty of water and resting will help.
Benefits of treatment Shiatsu can help improve quality of lifestyle in a number of ways such as controlling stress and improving concentration. For elderly or disability clients improving mobility, breathing and circulation as well as dealing with general aches and pains tends to be the priority in treatment. The Types of treatment I offer are customized to the needs of the client, the styles I use are the following however the most effective treatments often involve elements of different treatment styles
